Further afield Cornwall and West Devon offer many tourist attractions and activities. The cities of Plymouth and Truro provide shopping, entertainment and sports facilities. The Barbican in Plymouth is the starting point for coastal cruises, and close by is the National Marine Aquarium. North of Plymouth the open upland moorland expanse of Dartmoor stretches away. Outdoor activities of all kinds are available in this wilderness. The Tamar Valley, dotted with the chimneys and ruined engine houses of its mining history divides Devon from Cornwall. Further west lies Bodmin Moor which, like Dartmoor, offers a wide range of outdoor activities. The north coast
of Cornwall is more rugged than the south coast. Its beaches are
world renowned for surfing. Along the coast there are narrow rocky inlets,
fishing harbours and the remains of tin mines. The south coast is
calmer, and luxuriant
gardens flourish in the warm climate in the sheltered valleys. |

Near St Austell, built in an abandoned landscaped china clay pit, lies the Eden Project, world famous for its huge Biomes filled with plants from around the world. Not far away are the Lost Gardens of Heligan - a rediscovered marvel of Victorian horticulture. Britain's southernmost point, the Lizard, juts out into the English Channel. From its tip, below the Lizard lighthouse, you can watch the Atlantic, its shipping and wildlife, or wander the coast path to hidden coves and beaches. Further west the land comes to an end in the wide sweep of Sennen Cove, and the cliff tops at Land's End. From here it is a short hop across twenty odd miles of sea to the sub-tropical Scilly Isles.
