Legionnaires’ Disease is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia caught by inhaling water droplets containing legionella bacteria. Whilst it can affect anybody, certain groups of people are more susceptible. Symptoms of the disease range from a short flu-like fever to death in a few cases.

Around 350 cases of legionnaires’ disease are reported in the UK each year and is increasing, although it is thought that a great deal more cases go unnoticed.

Legionella bacteria are commonly found naturally in water sources such as rivers lakes and reservoirs, and are not always removed by conventional water treatment so are likely to be present in water systems such as:

• Domestic and industrial hot and cold water systems
• Evaporative condensers or cooling towers
• Water softeners
• Emergency drench showers and eye baths
• Humidifying air conditioning
• Fire sprinkler systems
• Food misting systems
• Horticultural misting systems
• Spa baths
• Dental equipment
• Fountains and water features
• Vehicle washes
• Lathes and machine cooling systems

Controlling legionella bacteria in the water systems in your premises is not
necessarily difficult or costly, but there are strict legal requirements which you must adhere to. [find out more] We are able to help you with all aspects of legionella control so please contact us to discuss your needs in more detail.
